Free Help, Real Results: Changing Local Families for the Better

We often say that kids don’t come with an instruction manual. Parenting, whether you are a biological parent, a foster parent, or a grandparent, is complex and often overwhelming. In our latest Health IQ episode, we were thrilled to sit down with Michelle Erwin and Rani Eggert to discuss a powerful local resource: Mesa Family Services.

What is Mesa Family Services?

Mesa Family Services is a community-based organization serving Quay, Baca, Harding, and Guadalupe counties. They offer voluntary, in-home support for families with children ranging from prenatal up to 18 years old. Their mission is to help families identify their strengths and work on areas they want to improve.

Because they are fully grant-funded through federal and state money, all of their services are 100% free of charge. This removes one of the biggest barriers families face when seeking help: the cost.

In-Home Support and Goal Setting

Rani Eggert, a Family Support Specialist, explained that the core of the program takes place right in the family’s home, at times that work for them—including evenings and weekends.

Families can set up to five specific goals to work on during their 3-to-6-month enrollment. Support can include:

Parenting Education: Using evidence-based curriculum to teach positive discipline and structure.

Life Skills: Helping with home organization, chore charts, meal prep, and budgeting.

Logistical Support: Assisting families with housing applications, Medicaid enrollment, or ensuring kids are up-to-date on immunizations.

Transportation: Providing rides to the grocery store, counseling, or medical appointments.

Counseling and Better Communication

Michelle Erwin, a licensed clinical counselor, highlighted that their free services also include mental health counseling. A major focus of the program is improving family communication. Instead of yelling to be heard, families learn how to truly listen and speak to one another, leading to healthier, happier homes.

How to Get Started

You do not need a referral from an agency like CYFD to participate (though they do accept those!). Any family who feels they need a little extra support can self-refer.
